Homeless Pooch Found Protecting A Baby Animal – Rescuers Then Realize It Isn’t A Puppy

When animal rescuers head out on a mission, they’re never sure what they’ll find.

Sometimes, they come across proof that animals are often more compassionate than humans, even when they’re suffering and alone.

For example, the rescue team Dallas DogRRR – which swears to find a home for every unwanted or abandoned dog in the Dallas, Texas area – has seen some absolute miracles.

When they stumbled on a poor homeless pit bull wandering along a dangerous road in southeast Dallas, they didn’t expect much more than a lonely, starving dog.

And at first, that’s exactly what they got.

The dog looked weak and it seemed obvious she hadn’t eaten properly in a long time.

On top of which, one of the rescuers noticed the pup – who they’d eventually call Pittie – had just had puppies, and they’d probably been taken away from her.

How horrible!

It wasn’t bad enough that mamma couldn’t raise her babies; she didn’t have a home, either.

However, rescuers then noticed that Pittie kept hanging around a certain spot in a dirty junkyard area, and they thought that maybe she’d managed to keep one of her puppies.

And they indeed found the dog caring for a tiny animal, resting in a little bundle of fur in the shade.

But it was no puppy!

No, it was a two-day-old kitten and it had been abandoned due to some health defects. But Pittie didn’t care about those defects; her babies were gone, so she took it upon herself to adopt the kitten.

It wasn’t even her own species and Pittie still wanted to play mother!

In fact, Pittie actually nursed the kitten and it’s so incredible that even the experts were surprised. Said Dr. Rick Hamlin of the Dallas Mercy Animal Clinic:

Over my 28-year career, I’ve never seen anything like this.

Then he guessed at how Pittie and her new kitty had come together:

My best guess is that the mother pit bull had a litter of pups and they died or weaned and she still had milk.

The pit bull probably found [the abandoned kitten] and took it as her own.

Of course, Pittie didn’t like it when her tiny kitten was taken away from her but thankfully, they didn’t have to remain separated for very long.

The two were reunited after the kitty’s examination and Pittie couldn’t have been happier. This was one devoted adopted mommy!

But even so, Pittie still needed a new home, so the clinic worked hard to find her a caring owner.

Thankfully, it didn’t take long for someone to come along and fall in love with the amazing Pittie and soon, she was on her way to her new home.

So, Pittie left Kitty behind and began a new life, with respectful owners who would are for her the way all dogs SHOULD be cared for.

Plus, Pittie had the opportunity to make friends with other dogs her new owner had, too.

So, even though Pittie and Kitty had to be separated in the end, this story proves just how unbelievably compassionate one animal can be for another, even when it’s outside his or her species.

Don’t you wish humans could be so kindhearted all the time?
